SRW (Segmental Retaining Wall)

Geosynthetically reinforced retaining walls have seen a huge spike in popularity over the last decade or so. The main reinforcing element in these structures is geogrid, although the use of a high-strength geotextile has seen increased acceptance. These retaining walls can be designed as temporary or permanent structures.

These structures incorporate many elements: The fascia (face), select or in-situ backfill, drainage layer (stone, geotextile filter fabric, perforated pipe) and the high-strength geotextile or geogrid reinforcement.

Permanent retaining walls can be faced with numerous elements including segmental block, cultured stone, welded-wire (aggregate or vegetated) or cellular confinement. Temporary structures, such as those used successfully in many highway projects, often feature woven geotextile wrapped faces.
