Do I need a drainage layer under the Stall Mat®?

Stall Mat® passes plenty of water (41 gallons/minute/sf). However, most subsoils in stalls are rather impermeable.
We recommend a drainage layer consisting of 4-6 inch layer of crushed, angular stone placed directly on the subsoil before installing the Stall Mat®.

Does Stall Mat® come with anchors and screws for installation?

Stall Mat® requires standard 2 x 2 furring strips and galvanized screws for installation. These are inexpensive and readily available at your local hardware store. We see no reason to add extra cost by purchasing them from us.

Stall Mat® Geotextile

Stall Mat® is a very heavy (26 ounce per square yard) nonwoven, polypropylene geotextile manufactured specifically for use in horse stalls. Stall Mat’s unique finish creates a super tough, water permeable horse stall mat that delivers a tremendous 41 gallons/minute/sf of water flow rate. Stall Mat® is a tough and economical alternative to rubber mats.

Typical subsoils in horse stalls are nearly impermeable. As a result, it is important to create a drainage layer between Stall Mat® and the subsoil. Without a drainage layer, it may appear the animal’s urine is not passing through the mat. Actually the flow is blocked by the subgrade soil. A 4 inch layer of crushed, angular stone placed between the Stall Mat® and the subsoil will create a drainage layer for the animal’s urine.

To install Stall Mat® unroll the desired length and cut with a quality utility knife. Measure enough mat to cover the stall floor and run up the stall sides a foot. Place the mat in the stall with the finished or “shiny” side up and the “fuzzy” side down. Attach the mat with galvanized wood screws and 2 x 2 furring strips that can be purchased at a local hardware store. Cut off the excess with the knife.

Stall Mat® is tough enough to withstand the repeated removal of bedding. We recommend a minimum of six inches of bedding to maximize the life span of the mat. When strong urine smell is an issue apply a disinfectant such as Pinesol directly on the exposed mat and allow it to drain through.

Stall Mat® is available in 13’ x 150’ rolls.
